As winter’s chill envelops much of the U.S., many outdoor enthusiasts yearn for the warmth of sunnier climates. Although I’ve previously covered cold-weather survival tips and gear, camping in cold weather is certainly not for everyone.
Escaping to milder regions not only provides a respite from freezing temperatures but also extends the camping season, allowing for a diverse array of activities.
From exploring unique ecosystems to stargazing under clear skies, warm winter camping offers an enticing blend of adventure and relaxation.
Here, we highlight some of lesser-known warm-weather camping destinations across the United States that definitely get my vote.
1. Everglades National Park, Florida: Subtropical Wilderness Adventure
The Everglades, a vast expanse of wetlands in southern Florida, boasts a unique ecosystem teeming with wildlife.
During the winter months, campers can enjoy mild temperatures and reduced humidity, making it an ideal time to visit.
Long Pine Key Campground and Flamingo Campgrounds offer serene spots to set up camp or park your RV amidst diverse habitats. Flamingo campgrounds even have some cool safari-style “eco tents” that can accommodate families.
Activities abound, from bird watching and kayaking through mangrove tunnels, to fishing, to hiking scenic trails. And don’t miss the manatees! As you might remember, it’s one of our 15 must-visit US National Parks, coming in at #14. But for escaping the cold? It’s #1.
However, it’s essential to be prepared for occasional rain showers, so packing appropriate rain gear is advisable.
2. Big Bend National Park, Texas: Desert Landscapes and Starry Nights
Nestled along the Rio Grande, Big Bend National Park encompasses a vast stretch of the Chihuahuan Desert.
Winter brings pleasant daytime temperatures, ideal for hiking the park’s numerous trails that wind through canyons and desert landscapes.
Chisos Basin Campground and Rio Grande Village Campgrounds provide comfortable bases for exploration.
As night falls, the park reveals some of the darkest skies in the U.S., offering unparalleled stargazing opportunities.
Campers should note that while days are mild, nights can be cool, so layering clothing is recommended.
3. Gulf Shores, Alabama: Coastal Camping and Fun by the Sea
For those seeking a coastal retreat, Gulf Shores provides sandy beaches and southern hospitality.
Gulf State Park offers campsites with easy access to the shoreline, allowing campers to fall asleep to the sound of gentle waves. It also won the TripAdvisor 2024 Traveler’s Choice Awards!
Daytime activities include swimming, fishing, and exploring the park’s extensive network of nature trails. Check out this exciting video for inspiration:
While winter temperatures are generally mild, it’s wise to check the forecast, as occasional cold fronts can bring cooler weather.
4. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Arizona: A Desert Oasis
Home to the rare organ pipe cactus (shown above in bloom) this national monument showcases the beauty of the Sonoran Desert.
The Twin Peaks Campground provides a tranquil setting with panoramic desert views. Hiking trails like the Desert View Trail offer insights into the area’s unique flora and fauna.
Winter days are warm and pleasant, perfect for exploration, but temperatures can drop at night, so packing layered clothing is advisable.
5. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California: Wildflowers and Wilderness
As California’s largest state park, Anza-Borrego encompasses vast desert landscapes, slot canyons, and, in good years, vibrant wildflower displays. The photo above was taken in spring, but these wildflowers have been known to rebloom even in winter!
The Borrego Palm Canyon Campground serves as a convenient base for exploring the park’s attractions. Off-roading enthusiasts will find numerous trails, while hikers can discover hidden oases.
The park’s remote location also makes it a prime spot for stargazing. Winter temperatures are mild, but evenings can be cool, so a warm jacket is recommended.
